Quick Tip to Attract Rock Star Employees

When John Hanson, CEO of The Maids of Kansas City, reached out to me a few months ago, he was in a bind. His business is growing rapidly—so rapidly he was turning away customers.

Why? He did not have the employees he needed to keep up with customer demand.

John signed up for our Tap Your Profit Potential Signature SWOT Analysis™, which revealed John and his team are doing so many things right. This is a healthy business, with a healthy culture. Yet, they still struggled to attract top performing employees.

Clues to the solution were revealed by John’s best employees. When I interviewed his employees, time and again, I heard them rave about their experience working at The Maids of Kansas City. This was a message that others, like his best employees, need to hear.  You see, John is all about giving people opportunities to improve their lives.

Following our SWOT feedback session, John asked his best employees to speak about their experience working at The Maids of Kansas City. He had their responses compiled in a recruitment video.

You can do this, too! Simply ask several of your best employees to:

1) describe what they like about working for you

2) identify what is hard, difficult or challenging about the work they do, and how they deal with that

Strategy: Inoculating prospective applicants about the more challenging aspects of the job increases the likelihood they will stick it out since they know ahead of time what they are getting into.

3) share specific opportunities for advancement they have taken advantage of

Like attracts like! When you have a recruiting video like this one, there are lots of things you can do with it.

Here’s just 1 idea: Post it in social media and encourage your employees to share it (if you couple this with an Employee Referral Incentive Program, watch out…that post will go viral!)

Thank you, John, for sharing your video with us!

Never one to accept the status quo or back down from a challenge, Dr. Sabrina’s How to Hire the Best series grew from her desire to solve the toughest hiring challenges interfering with her clients’ growth and profitability. What sprang from her experience working with entrepreneurs in rural areas catapulted her into becoming the world’s leading expert in attracting top talent in small businesses—no matter what hiring challenges those businesses are facing—and earned Tap the Potential’s reputation as the go-to resource for entrepreneurs committed to creating Great Places to Work with thriving coaching cultures and highly engaged team members working from strengths.
