Don’t forget to check all your mirrors! Adjust them to your height and then always turn your head to check your…BLIND SPOTS. We heard it a million times when we were going through driver’s ed. Why, then, when running a business do we forget that we don’t know what we don’t know?
What pieces of your operation are your blind spots and how do you find them?
Unfortunately, we often don’t recognize our blind spots until after something unfortunate has occurred. What went wrong? What systems weren't in place? Why didn’t I see it?
There’s of course, a proactive way to review our blind spots. I recently did this for myself when I was planning my 6-week vacation. I wanted to examine which tasks were using up all my energy and compare it with what I love to do, and am the best at doing.
By examining this with the support of a fellow coach (yes, even coaches have coaches because we have our own blind spots!) , I was able to see I had a HUGE blind spot as to some roles and responsibilities within the company that I simply needed to delegate. Whether there is someone better for the task, or it would free up time for me to laser-focus on my strongest group of strengths—like coaching and strategizing, which incorporate almost all of my major strengths, it was time to let go. Task switching between tasks that do not utilize my strengths was leaving me feeling tired, unfulfilled and frustrated. THOSE are not the feelings I want to have as I run my business!
One of the biggest blind spots our clients identify just a couple of months into working with us is simply “I didn't know what I didn't know.” This statement is usually made in reference to a total mindset shift and a new way of thinking strategically about the business.
What was once hard, overwhelming and frustrating, is becoming simple, clear and straightforward with a new mindset and strategy for growing profit and a fun, great place to work!
Running an effective and profitable business takes stamina and focus, with short term wins and long term gains. Let’s find your blind spots, work on them together, and set a solid vision for your business…and yourself.
