Leading Small Business Hiring Expert Delivers Message of Hope To 2020 Graduates
Small Business Presents Tremendous Opportunity for New Job Seekers
As graduates face job uncertainty due to the Covid-19 impact on the economy, a leading small business hiring expert is hopeful for the 2020 class. I want to acknowledge that looking for work can be discouraging with the extremely high rate of unemployment, but I urge graduates to consider applying for positions with small businesses.
Small businesses are on a recent uptick of hiring:
- There are 30.2 million small businesses in the U.S.
- Small businesses comprise 99.9% of U.S. businesses
- Small businesses employ 59 million Americans
- 5 percent of workforce are in the small business sector
There is a tremendous opportunity for 2020 graduates. I’m in conversations every day with small business owners who are ramping up and expecting to grow, which means they will be adding jobs to their payroll.

Advantages of Working for a Small Business
Large companies have scaled back and have been laying off employees. I promote small businesses to new graduates due to the enormous advancement opportunities that an employee wouldn’t normally have in large businesses. Other small business employment advantages include:
- Opportunity to advance quickly. Team workers brought on over the last 3-4 years have advanced
- Intangible perks. More flexibility, better life balance and opportunity to learn a variety of skills
I advise small business owners to look for those A-Players, individuals who are problem solvers and go getters. I counsel owners to provide A players opportunities and support to grow. And, we must all remember to lead from our strengths (check out our free webinar). I’m so passionate about How to Hire the Best that I wrote an entire book series on it! My newest edition is coming out September 2020!
My advice to new graduates is to be on a quest to be better. Job seekers should understand their strengths, not take their strengths for granted and leverage their strengths to be part of the solution.
